Why Aborto ?
The walls of our home are painted with warmth but not that of our house.’ This simple difference, which we learnt long back, is instilled in our subconscious … somewhere within. And so, we crave to go back to our Home --- in effect, we go back to our childhood, we go back to our college , we go back to our past and keep going….. Time and time again.
Nowadays, we are stuck to living on our own ----- we are stuck to our notebooks, to our ipods, to our ipads, to our laptops, to our headphones ……
Quite impersonally we have forgotten to look into each other’s eyes and warmly greet each other …
A fear exists, a doubt persists ….
Are we really living life ? Do I really touch you ?
We are sharing our lives through internet, through media, through opinion polls, through social networking sites …. and essentially living together yet living alone.
With ‘Aborto’ (The Vortex) , I wished we re live, we re touch, we re smile and we remind – Life is beautiful, let us live it.

Description
Aborto is a film which talks about the relentless pursuit of prominence in professional career, and the resulting alienation from loved ones in terms of sensitivity, feeling and emotion. The film portrays a vortex of emotions, drama and relationships between Shyamal, Charu, Hari, Duli, Runu, characters which were influenced by ones in various Satyajit Ray's Films.Plot Outline
SHYAMAL is a dynamic corporate professional. For the last fifteen years, life has been a relentless pursuit of power, supremacy and prominence in his career. At last the day has come when only a few moments remain before Shyamal can finally relish the fruits of his labour. The Annual General Meeting of the company has just begun and if there is no major upheaval, Shyamal is slated to reach the position he has been vying for so long. But it seems that the man of the moment may not be destined to realize his long cherished dream. He is restless, disturbed and distressed. And no less than four people hold the key to his state of mind–CHARU, HARI, RUNU, DULI.
For Shyamal’s wife CHARU, it is just another day in her small, private world, alienated from all that Shyamal holds dear. Over the years, husband and wife have drifted apart in terms of sensitivity, feeling and emotion. But Charu does not allow loneliness and despair to engulf her. Instead, she has carved out for herself an existence of dignity, freedom and tranquility. Only one person has limited access to her intimate space – a high profile celebrity cricketer named HARI…
Hard-working, mysterious and deeply sensual, DULI was destined to be much more than Shyamal’s secretary. Even while indulging in a stormy and passionate affair, Shyamal struggles with Charu's indifference and Duli has to come to terms with ghosts from her past. And if the secret gets exposed, it will be the trump card for RUNU, Shymal’s unworthy competitor, yearning to beat him for fifteen long years. Throughout the day, SHYAMAL has been wandering in search of a refuge as there is sufficient threat of an anticlimax.
SHYAMAL opens the gate to his ancestral house and steps in, something he has not done in last fifteen years. The first room he is seen entering is the dark and dreary room of his fanatic bookworm, PROSHANTO. He was once the most dominant influence in Shyamal’s life. Will this haggard schizophrenic cure his tormented soul and aching heart ? Does he hold the key to Shyamal’s salvation and redemption from the sins he has unwittingly committed?
From the old broken chair next to the only window in the room, PRASHANTO pulls up his lean neck, looks intently at SHYAMAL and mutters – ‘Ami jantam tui ekdin ashbi…’( I knew that one day you would come back).

Introducing Charu Sen.
Inspiration : Satyajit Ray's Charulata
About the Character : Charu is a lonely woman. Her dreams of loving household have long been put to rest by her husband Shyamal’s ambition. She has all the time in the world without the means and ideas to spend it. It’s Charu’s individual isolation which has successfully created a rift between them leading to a marriage which is already gone stale. It’s around this time in her life, she meets Hori.
The Character is played by : JAYA AHSAN (lives in Bangladesh)

Introducing Shyamal Sen.
Inspiration : Satyajit Ray's Shyamalendu Chatterjee from the film Seemabadha
About the Character : Shyamal, a wannabe Vice-President of a Multi National Corporate House, is a story of aspirations, broken fairytales and isolation within a corporate domain and a guilt which clash and hang side by side his own persona. On the other hand, Shyamal, Charu’s beloved husband is awestruck by Duli, his executive assistant. Her natural charm, beauty and obvious efficiency takes over Shyamal completely. Did Shyamal really want to use Duli or was it that Duli had become the moon stricken missing link between the broken fairy tales of the individual lives of Shyamal and Charu there by becoming a perfect case study of the nature of privilege through the prism of corporate legacy. Shyamal thought he acquired the pinnacle of his dreams. Did he?
The Character is played by : TOTA ROY CHOWDHURY

Introducing Hori Bose
Inspiration : Satyajit Ray's Hari Ghosh from the film Aranyer Din Raatri
About the Character : Hori here is a promising and one of the most popular cricketers of the India Cricket Scenario. Hori has been long wooed by Shyamal’s company to be a brand ambassador of their company. This successful cricketer who has everything but lacks something then takes off on a mission-less journey into the heartland of Charu to get away from urban rigmaroles, which she initially ignores but later in a way succumbs to and without knowing why indulges into. Here he becomes a perfect antithesis for Shyamal’s character, he woos and admires, but does he care?
The Character is played by : ABIR CHATTERJEE
Aborto |
Introducing Runu Sanyal
Inspiration : Satyajit Ray's Runu Sanyal from Seemabadhya
About the Character : Runu Sanyal is the modern day incarnation of Ray’s Runu Sanyal from Seemabadhya. Runu is the sneaky rival of Shyamal, for the post of Vice President. He is in awe with him, yet dislikes him from the bottom of his scheming heart. He has no qualms over using his own wife for his vested benefits.
The Character is played by : SASWATA CHATTERJEE
Aborto |
Introducing Duli Mitra
Inspiration : Satyajit Ray's Duli from Aranyer Din Raatri
About the Character : Duli Bose, Shyamal’s new secretary, is a bright, confident, efficient and charming young woman who has no qualms over sleeping with her boss. She has learned the hard way. Maybe, she has developed a fascination for Shyamal. Who knows, but her heart?

Aborto |
Introducing Siddhartha Mitra
Inspiration : Satyajit Ray's Siddhartha from Protidwandi.
About the Character : Siddhartha an adversary is the brother of Duli who speaks out his mind which sometime irks and irritates even his own sister. He is the only character who can see the truth through the facial hypocrisies with a vision which perhaps has an x-ray digression. Siddhartha ideologically supports the cause of revolution without offering himself to it.
The Character is played by : RITWICK CHAKRABORTY
Aborto |
Introducing Proshanto Sen
Inspiration : Satyajit Ray's Prosanto from Sakha Prosakha
About the Character : Shyamal’s elder brother Prosanto, once a brilliant student, but now, unfounded and unwarranted, but not groundless teaches these days. Prosanto has long lost his mark sheets that relic’d his academic brilliance. Prosanto had known it all along how “valo khoka”(nice boy) had burnt his marksheets... ruined his career... wrecking his life. But Prosanto who had always spoken out his mind sometimes irritating Shyamal has no regrets. Perhaps he too admires this younger brother of his for his convictions.
The Character is played by : KAUSHIK GANGULY
